This restaurant started 140 years ago cultivating oyster for shipment to then-capital Kyoto. About 50 years ago they started selling directly to food-lovers in Hiroshima. The restaurant used to be a boat that is now on permanent pilings next to peace park. The food we had was excellent. Definitely do no go if you do not like oysters! It is basically all they sell. The focus is on the food, not decor which is sparse. This is the only reason I knocked off a star. The staff was friendly and spoke excellent English.

We had a hard time finding the place. The maps we were given at the Tourist office showed the restaurant below the Heiwa -ohashi bridge and on both sides of the river so just to set the record straight, it is on the east bank of the river just below the Motoyasu-ohashi bridge, right next to where you take the Aqua-net boat to Miyajima. That said, we probably should have stopped where we were last night and given up instead of looking for it again today. A meal not worth making the effort for. We had the fried oysters, an order of the plump 3 month old raw oysters and the "Today's oyster" which they announced was 800 yen instead of the 486 yen listed on the menu. I love oysters. I am French and grew up on them and I live in San Francisco. Trust me: not worth it. I had two oysters the day before on Miyajima for 600 Yen at a place called BARL Issai on the main street that was so good it was orgasmic, a description I would not apply to anything I ate here. Setting is nice but sterile. Service was ok but we were the only people in the place.

What a fabulous find after wandering around Kyoto and saw the boat as I crossed the river. Wandered in and they found me a table over looking the river, very peaceful and relaxing. In the restaurant they had a lovely waitress who started chatting and her English was great, this made things a lot easier and it was great to have a chat with her. She also showed me how to prepare a 'peace' origami from scratch, it was fun and something the restaurant do for guests, lovely touch. I would highly recommend this place for foreigners as well as locals! Arigatōgozaimashita

First a warning - they have moved locations - it is now up the street right next to an Italian restaurant. Also, I recommend making a reservation as they get pretty busy. Additionally, there are certain menus that can only be ordered in advance, so if you want the eight course oyster tasting make sure you order that ahead of time. I had an amazing meal here. I had the Hiroshima Variety Tasting - it was delicious and filling and a great value at 5,400 yen, plus I had some great local sake for 500 each. The highlights were the fried oysters, but really every course was delicious. The english speaking waitress was great and even acted as translator so I could tell the manager how much I liked the restaurant. Would highly recommend and would definitely go back.
