  • Asked the Hotel Nikko Kanaya for a recommendation as the hotel dining room serves Continental cuisine. He suggested Gyoshintei, a Japanese restaurant that emphasizes Buddhist cuisine. Located in a forested area across from Nikko National Park, the restaurant is unassuming in decor with a traditional entry room that opens up to a medium-sized dining room with large picture windows with views into the forest. The restaurant was not crowded (3 other people) when we were there on a Saturday night at 7:30, but we relied on the hotel's recommendation and stayed(It would have been hard to leave because we were in the woods and no one at the restaurant spoke more than a few words of English.) We didn't receive a menu, but maybe the hotel clerk told the restaurant what to serve us. We had no expectations about what we would eat or that it would be one of the most spectacular meals that we have ever had. The darling server dressed in a pink kimono delivered each course with an endearing smile and respect for us and the food. My husband and I took photos of each plate, bowl, cup that arrived at our table. Beautifully presented, the tastes were subtle, indescribable, and delicious. The best miso soup that I have ever tasted. Tofu presented in so many ways with so many different tastes. YUM! All while viewing the magical, mystical trees of the Nikko forest. One of the best dining experiences I have ever had and my reference points include L'Ambrosie, Daniel, Inn at Little Washington among others.
