One of the best Greek Souvlaki in Athens and not only at New Smirni. Visitors are from all Athens area.

Was feeling like having souvlaki and happened to come across a post claiming to list the top 5 souvlaki places in Athens. This one got my attention as it mentioned that they did not add French fries in it or tzatziki and this is the way to have a souvlaki. I do generally like tzatziki and French fries in my souvlaki but I also know that the real souvlaki should not have anything other than quality meat, tomato and onion. The post also said that they used un-oiled pita bread which was also a plus. The verdict: I got one souvlaki with chicken and one with pork. Both were excellent. The pitta was slightly crunchy, deliciously tasty and as advertized not soaked in oil. The meat (pork and chicken) was so fresh, tender and well cooked that each bite was melting in my mouth. The tomato was ripe and sweet and the onion gave the whole thing the “bite” it needed. I did get on the side French fries (great) and tzatziki (mild but good) but the souvlaki was so good it really didn’t need anything more. Usually the tzatziki and potatoes are added to cover the poor meat and rest of the ingredients quality. This souvlaki needs nothing! It is hands down the best souvlaki I’ve ever had. (The choriatiki salad could have used a bit more salt/pepper and oil/vinegar)
