Whilst away on business recently I stayed one night at the Holiday Inn Berlin Airport. I thought it would be within walking distance to the airport but it is not. A shuttle bus is necessary (leaves twice an hour). My room was pleasant, clean and comfortable as well as reasonable value but I could not get the a/c to work and it was too hot in the night so I opened the window. I had dinner in the restaurant as there is nowhere within walking distance nearby to eat. The menu was promising but the food was very average and the service appallingly slow. I could not get the free Wi-Fi in the room to work. The vending machine ran out of bottled water and I had to buy a small bottle for a staggering Euro3.50 from reception. They had put two free wafer biscuits in the room compliments of the manager. I would have preferred some free mineral water!

The restaurant menu was quite promising. Since it was asparagus season I had the soup. Freshly prepared & very tasty. With a yummy chunk of fatty pork on top. Wanted something light so went for the trout. Good choice. Enjoyed it but the salad must be the world record smallest one in the world. The only salad in evidence was a sprig of parsley. I was full enough so did not bother to point this out to the staff. Very slow service. The free 45 minutes of Wifi soon expired. I suppose the hold up was the kitchen since the restaurant was not crowded. So the inexcusable lack of attention to detail like forgetting the salad I suppose shows that the staff were just too bored to pay attention. It was quite challenging to get their attention to settle my bill since my waitress disappeared with food for room service & the waiter decided to ignore my request to pay.

Nice hotel: clean and comfortable. The restaurant is passable but not anything more. However the only reason for staying at this hotel is that it serves Schonfeld airport which is the worst in Europe and should be avoided at all costs. It is totally dysfunctional and unsafe. It is dirty and utterly lacking in the ordinary facilities of an airport such as lifts and escalators. The staff are rude, nasty, unhelpful and lazy. It is a hub for EasyJet whose staff compete with the airport staff to be as unpleasant as possible. There must be bonuses for the winners each month: how else to explain how they can imagine they are serving their customers. Sad for the hotel staff but the management must have decided to plant the place here. One may find that there are, surprisingly, more mosquitoes about than guests!
