  • Firstly, full marks on finding this place. it isn't exactly well advertised and you could walk past it without realizing it. Inside it is a mix of old world charm, second hand furniture and pure chaos! With a great selections of wine by the glass and an eccentric owner playing some great music, it is definitely worth seeking out

  • Don't bring your hen party -- you'll never fit in the place, literally. This wine closet-turned-bar run by the enigmatic Jean-Louis is either going to hit you right in the feels, or you will turn around and walk back out the door. The low (red) lighting can't hide that there are open wine boxes overflowing with untouched dusty bottles of every kind of wine on the planet, as well as small dishes of half-eaten hors d'oeuvres lining the bar (who's been fingering that stuff?), but the crowd feels authentic enough, and if you can get Jean-Louis's attention, you'll drink a glass of something yummy.

  • The Bu Bar is one of my favourite bars in Paris. Jean-Lou is a rare host - funny, super smart, helpful and the proud custodian of many delicious "new world" wines. Indeed, he's the seemingly effortless creator of one of the most delightful small bars in France. Take note that the Bur Bar is a bit tricky to find. One very nice thing is that it's never too busy. So please, don't tell too many people. When the bar opened it was a pristine example of clever, discreet and comfortable interior design. Today, more than 10 years later, the place is full of fascinating stock and different types of treasures attesting to a love of life, fine wine, whiskey, digestifs, art, and music. It has a special touch of magic that has to be experienced to be fully understood. I often take visitors to Paris to Bu Bar, typically after work or dinner. Share some charcuterie or fromage and a glass or three of wine. Offer visitors to France a cognac, armagnac or calvados. Or a wee dram of excellent whiskey. Ask Jean-Lou to advise or select depending on what you feel like enjoying or discovering. First timers are unanimously spellbound and delighted. 10/10, but please, let's keep this a secret. • I first discovered Bubar by accident a couple of years ago as I was trying to avoid the Bastille crowds... you have to know the address (3 rue des Tournelles) as there's no sign or just look closely when you're walking along the sidewalk. A friend and I spent an unforgettable evening here downing exceptional bottles of red, chowing down on delicious patés and cheeses, and having energetic discussions with the owner. As someone who has lived in France for 20 years, I particularly love the fact that the owner takes a very down-to-earth, familiar approach to people as though he's known you for years. He's someone who speaks his mind and really knows his stuff when it comes to wines... Ahhh, the wines! That is why you are here! But beware, this is not a typical Parisian wine bar!! First of all, there is an extraordinary number of wines to choose from, by the bottle AND by the glass, so let the expert owner guide you. Secondly, there are virtually no French wines. This is also manna from heaven to an expat who sometimes despairs of having anything decent from any other country because the French are so overly protective of their wines to the exclusion of almost all other countries, particularly the New World. Last night, for example, I started with a glass of Spanish chardonnay, hopped the ocean to a glass of Chilean chardonnay, and then hopped back for a semi-sweet South African white to finish off a delightful evening of excellent wines, great music, interesting conversation, and warm ambiance. For my friend and me last night, 6 glasses came to the ridiculously low sum of €30. The place is tiny, and not all the chairs are that comfy, so do yourself a favour and be at the bar (where there are also small plates of snacks on offer) to be nearer the charming barman. As a woman, I also appreciate the fact that there are pursehooks on the bar, something that not enough French bars have! And decent toilets!! In short, a place for winelovers looking for something different whe
