  • We recently spent a couple of weeks in Edinburgh. Our apartment was on Thistle Street and the Thistle Street Sandwich Bar quickly became a happy start to our days. This is the kind of place frequented by local working people, on their way to work or on a break. They have a great selection of freshly made sandwiches, egg salad, bacon, ham, cheese and so on. I typically ate a protein packed made to order sausage, ham and fried egg sandwich, which cost two and a half pounds. We liked their sandwiches much more than those we had bought at the chain sandwich shop around the corner. Lots of people took their sandwiches out, but we ate at the corner table. The cheery young women behind the counter chatted us up every morning wanting to know where we were exploring that day, and offered advise in their delightful Scots brogue.

  • We visited for breakfast and had the Scottish Breakfast. The black pudding and haggis were great but the rest was pretty average. Coffee was terrible but the service was really good and the outdoor courtyard was lovely.
