If your Portuguese language skills are limited but you want to eat like a local, throw caution to the wind and try Casa dos Passarinhos. We left the decisions to our server (who spoke no English) and we weren't exactly sure what we were going to be served. My grilled mackerel ... correction ... two whole mackerels were delicious, and the assortment of winter vegetables was tasty. My husband ordered the pork special. He was served a huge platter of assorted pork and sausage pieces along with veggies and rice. (It seems we frequently are served at least two starches at dinner here: rice and potatoes.) The house wine was wonderful (less than 4 euros for a large carafe). Despite eye-popping portions, we managed to have dessert too. The restaurant offers a nice assortment of custards and some tarts/cakes. The ambiance is lovely too. Our total bill for one of the most extravagant dinners we've had in Lisboa was around 35 euros.

We spent a good three hours researching our last dinner in Lisbon and chose wisely! Didn't want a touristy place and the reviews for this restaurant were fairly strong. The menu was a little difficult to decipher since none of us speak/read Portuguese but our waiter was patient and there was an English speaking couple there who helped us. Two of us ordered the grilled salmon, another had the alheira sausage, and two of us split the beef cooked on volcanic stone at the table. The beef was actually more like a large piece of tenderloin and came with two different dipping sauces. Everything was delicious - including the sautéed greens and roasted potatoes that came with the salmon dishes. For dessert, the waiter took us to the case and showed us each option. Chocolate mousse and flan were terrific and I was lucky enough to try the sericaia. It's an egg pudding with cinnamon and it was out of this world. The food was fresh, well cooked, and seasoned perfectly. The waitstaff were welcoming and friendly and seemed to appreciate our attempts at (poorly) speaking their language. The whole evening was memorable. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for great traditional Portuguese food that is reasonably priced and not catering to the tourist crowd.

We called one evening without a reservation and got a small table for two, the huge chunk of meat and small hot stone didn't rally work as by the time you worked through the meat the stone was cold, also struggled with the language a bit, our carafe of wine turned into a bottle. Overall we enjoyed it but could have been better
