  • We (4 adults and two young boys aged 9 and 6 1/2) had a fantastic lunch at Marguro in Chadstone last Sunday. It was our second visit in two months, but this time we bought the whole family with us. On the blackboard menu, we saw a special "sashimi-sushi-wagyu beef" dinner set for 4 inclusive of one bottle of Penfolds Bin 28, priced at $228. It was marked as available for dinner on Monday and Wednesday only. In response to our query, the manager agreed to serve such dinner set for us. As shown in the photos uploaded, the set comprises pan-fried calamari; Japanese salad; sashimi sushi platter, grilled wagyu beef; miso soup; fried rice; and ice cream. All the dishes came in fairly large portion, and the wagyu beef actually came on four plates - one for each of the adult. Everything was fresh and delicious. For the kids, we ordered its salmon sushi and teriyaki chicken udon, for $9.50 each - both were much liked by them. It was our consensus that Maguro is the best Japanese restaurant for the family. At the end of the meal and as we checked for the bill, the manager gave the boys one packet of candy each. This is a very nice touch and the boys love it.

  • My wife and I had lunch at this small sushi/sashimi restaurant today. While it offered lunch specials at below $10 each, we both picked the C Bento set at $18.50 each (see photos uploaded) so that we may have a good assessment of how fresh or otherwise its sashimi/sushi might be. We went in a 11.59 am just when it was due to open. The waiter asked us whether we wanted water or tea. We said tea and we were served with two tea cups and a pot of hot tea (costing us $4.80, as we discovered when we checked for the bill). After ordering, first came the miso soup, served in a stone bowl, with a spoon in it (see photo). This, as our experience recalls, was not traditional Japanese style. But the soup was hot and tasted good. The Bento when it came surprised us with the freshness of the fish slices, the sushi rice with the right texture, and the large serving portion size. It comprises a salad with crab fillet, six pieces of sashimi (salmon, tuna and snapper), six pieces of assorted sushi, and six pieces of salmon rolls, plus some pickles. Both of us were quite full. The staff here appeared to be speaking Cantonese among themselves but the decor of the restaurant and the food being offered on the menu were Japanese, including tempura, shabu shabu and terriyaki, etc. For those who may use TomTom to find their way there, beware! My Tomtom led me to far beyond the Princes Highway to the south. In fact, Maguro is located on the northeastern side of the M1 exit on Warrigal Road, crossing Tuhan Road (where more parking spaces could be found). The
