  • The service is real, you feel very welcomed when you come in, immediately we were offered the sampler, which was explained to us, a little taste of what the menu offers, i decided on the special, which was the goat meat, my friend got the tomato sauce and spinach, which all the entrees are basically a plate of food, served with rice and your choice of topping. You only decide between a large or a medium. Beware it is pricey, they use fresh Ingredients but i dont see how two dinners one medium and one small come up to $34.00, again the customer service was amazing, everyone is really nice in there... I would have given 5 stars if our food didnt cost so much.

  • I am very familiar with food from other West/Central African countries and living overseas, this is the one kind of food I miss so, whenever I pass through DC, I am always excited to find a great restaurant with similar dishes. Off the bat, as another traveler said, go for the food, not the ambiance. It seems as their name states, they do a lot of carryout business. Even if you are eating in, food in served in sturdy carry out containers which, makes it easier to wrap up any extra food to go afterwards. The restaurant itself has about 6 tables and can seat approximately 30 people. If it is your first time, they will serve you a little sample of all 6 items on the menu. Basically, the menu is different kinds of stews with a basis of leafy greens (spinach etc.), 1 tomato based stew and fried rice. They generally have either chicken or beef and sometimes goat! The stew is served over rice. For the more adventurous/experienced eaters, you can get the stew with fufu (yam based) or, gari (cassava). A google search should give you more information on fufu and gari. The portions are HUGE! In retrospect, one large stew can feed 2 people. We had the stew with potato leaves with goat meat and fufu-my 9 year old had his with chicken and ate half of it. We also had the peanut stew over rice with goat meat and my husband could only eat half of it. We went there for lunch and I was full through the rest of the day! The owner had a warm smile from the time we entered and really engaged my son. Our server was equally great. Next time I am in DC, I will make sure to stop by again.

  • Sumah runs a little neighborhood gathering place for West Africans, but with his excellent food and welcoming manner he has attracted a wide range of customers in search of something different. The restaurant seats 20 at simple formica-top tables, and the food is served in styrofoam containers which can double as a doggy bag. The pictures don’t do justice to the food; it doesn’t taste like what it looks like (I won’t tell you what I thought the pictures looked like). The sauces tend to be a little spicy, and the meat or fish they are served over is basic. This is plain, simple, tasty food. We had the okra, tomato, potato leaves, and krain krain sauces over fish and chicken (the medium size is plenty big enough). The okra sauce tasted like real okra, and the tomato sauce tasted like fresh tomatoes with some seasonings. The green sauces are hard to describe, except that the krain krain has a sharper flavor than the potato leaves. The meal concludes with an enormous piece of watermelon. After that, you waddle out the door happy and content.

  • This place was great. This was my first time trying African food. It was so different than what I am used to. I am so glad we got to go here. The place is slightly out of the way from central DC and isn't fancy, but it is the experience we were looking for. The owner helped us get a cab after we were done because he knew we were from out of town. I was very impressed.
