  • After searching for approximately 2 hours for a good, reasonably priced sushi restaurant in New York we decided on this on. We got 3 rolls, all of which were dry, not very flavorful and not impressive whatsoever. I expected so much more from this restaurant and was shocked that our local sushi joint in Iowa is 10x better than this. I suggest going somewhere a little higher priced if you want better sushi.

  • As the title of my review indicates, I live in New York City (Manhattan). If you look at my extensive list of reviews, you will find that I have never discussed a 'local' place. Last week I was at Yama for my usual Friday night dinner with some friends and realized I was doing a disservice to the business and so many visitors of NYC by not sharing my views. Yozo, the owner/manager is there every night (except Sunday when the restaurant is closed). He is exceptionally friendly, personally chooses the food each day to be served, and treats his employees and customers with the utmost respect. Hirome (my spelling may be off, as her name is pronounced "hero me,") is the vivacious and amiable hostess, who has greeted me with a sincere hello for over a decade. The sushi chefs perform their art behind a sleek sushi bar as just as friendly and respectful, always bowing and saying hello upon entering the main dining area. The restaurant is located on the south (left) side of 49th street, between 1st and 2nd avenues (closer to 2nd avenue). It has a clean glass entrance with the food grade "A" in the bottom left corner. There is no sign outside indicating you are about to step into the #1 Sushi restaurant in NYC. The food- as I mentioned earlier, I never review NYC establishments, however after over a decade of eating here religiously, it's time. The quality of the sushi is so strong that other than a dip or two of spicy mayo or soy sauce, you don't need to do anything. Unlike other more popular sushi restaurants, Yozo and his team pride themselves on the quality of the ingredients, not on the complication of the tastes. While I seldom venture outside of a sushi-centric meal, the cooked food is fantastic and could stand alone as a Japanese fine dining experience. Everyone has different tastes and while I always love to try one of the special’s (last week it was a sashimi red snapper that has a smoky undertone and was amazing), I’ve gone ahead and compiled my go to menu to help

  • This restaurant finally got rid of its B and stayed an A for long while. It is consistent in its servings and the freshness of its sushi and sashimi. The slices fish are relatively bigger than your regular sushi/sashimi place. Although the wait staff seems to change frequently, they are always pleasant and already focus when they work. Even the wait staff from China named Jen who has been there only two weeks is already versed in her chores. The sushi order for two can actually satisfy three not too hungry patrons. Ambiance is very good. Draws a big crown around noon to one PM from office workers in the area. No full bar but limited wine and saki. The calamari and fried oysters as appetizers are excellent.
