Very popular as an after work dining experience. We had a booth by ourselves for 4. Recommend choosing lots of small plates e.g. Fried chicken, octopus, tofu, potato salad (scrummy), 17 ingredient salad, gyoza (dumplings) yakitori sticks (heart, liver, chicken skin). Seriously great pick and eat food. Great beer and highballs too. if you want to dine with friends or business colleagues without interruption then this is the place!

Ikebukuro Za-Watami is a part of Za-Watami chain of isakayas. The parent company also runs other restaurant chains in Japan like Watami, TGI Friday's, etc. The Za-Watamis are all almost identical. Maze-like, stylish, and dimly lit dark wooden stalls that can be closed of for privacy with a curtain. The food is good and with lots of variety. Also some western stuff like fries and deserts but mainly japanese. Price range for plates is around 400 yen, drinks 500. 2000 to 3000 yen should be enough per person. Menu comes with pictures of all foods and drinks, and there is an english/chinese/korean translation menu available. Ambience is the best part for me. Private, good service, cool classic japanese interior and jazz playing in the background. Been visiting many locations and will visit again in the future. One of my favourites as a tourist in Japan. There are better places for sure but Za-Watamis are great for foreigners. Just step in, indicate how many persons are coming, take your shoes of and wait to shown to your stall. When you need service just ring the bell. Point at the menu pictures, order and enjoy!. Simple as that.
