The smoking dog is the right place to have coffee or drinks, or to have a straight-forward evening bite. The food was very much ok, considering this is not a fine dining place. Service and the clientele were very welcoming and friendly. You became a part of the St. Germain everyday life.

I noticed previous complaints here which made me think that some visitors don't realize how many levels of French Cuisine do exist. You cannot go to a Bar/Brasserie that advertises “service continue” (open non-stop) and expect fine dining. These places in France are inexpensive and convenient, but they usually have sandwiches, salads, sweets and cheap booze. This one is no exception: the salads are ordinary, large portions, same for the sandwiches, and drinks are quite reasonable (half a litter of red, white or rose is €9 -11. We had Salade Nicoise and Salade “Chien qui fume”, both huge enough to feed an elephant, and drank “une cinquante” (.50l) of Luberon Rose and the whole thing cost €35, including excellent French baguette. What else can you ask for if you are in a hurry and just want to grab a quick bite. Service was very friendly and quite efficient, too. The shiny red bulldog on its plastic grass pad was an added bonus. Although it was lacking a pipe…

We were only in Paris for 2 nights and hoped to find something that, to us, represented the real Paris. We stumbled across this place whilst wandering around from our hotel on the first evening and, to us at least, it ticked every box. Old traditional style brasserie, good relaxed atmosphere, cosy but not crowded (local and tourist mix), interesting decor, excellent food, decent drinks, friendly attentive and speedy service and a reasonable price (converted to £75 for 2 of us including beers/wine) for one of the best meals out I've had any time, anywhere. Definitely recommend.
