  • Tried this for a family dinner and we were delighted: the menu was imaginative, light, seasonal, creative in a comfortably modern but not austere atmosphere. We started with fresh and contrasted tartare de dorade, marinated lisette, and delicious langoustines. Followed by a deliciously subtle (oh too rare) duck magret, a fine lobster au Bleu, and veal sweetbreads that were so crisp and elegant that even my family - normally unenthusiastic - raved about them. All accompanied by a 2001 St. Estephe - one of the shortish bit carefully chosen and correctly priced wine list. And then the unexpected treasure at the end of the meal. Thank goodness we had left space for what certai LY count among the best desserts we have had for a very long time: melted rhubarb with green apple sorbet was subtle, exciting and tantalising; a cubist Thai chocolate creation with ginger ice cream was luscious without being invasive, genuinely sensuous; and the aubergine confit crisp and gently salty in a creme de lait was a witty finale. Rare for me to rave in this manner - 1868 very nearly deserves a 5, perhaps the service could be a little smarter. (and let me again it in a plug for lafourchette.com - reserving through them gave us 30% off the whole bill, making it a very reasonable evening out.)
