  • Not so long ago, you just couldn't get Mexican food for love or money in Kyoto. Now there are a few places, all with things to recommend them. El Bonito goes for the dive: thick with cigarette smoke, beer in bottles, winking Christmas lights. So far, so good, if you like that sort of thing. The main problem with El Bonito is that it's too mild. I know the Japanese traditionally get very nervous about spicy foods, but these days everybody eats Korean and Sichuan and hot curry -- everybody, anyway, who's going to stay out late drinking in a Mexican dive. But there's not nearly enough chiles in the place. That said, the food is pretty decent. It's a little expensive if you're planning to eat a meal, but very solid and fair if you're eating snacks with your drinks. Beer is well priced. I'm told the margaritas are good, but I haven't had one yet. If you're in it for the food, go one short block east and 1.5 blocks north, just short of Oike-dori, and eat at La Jolla. After it closes, if you're in the mood, come to El Bonito and drink and smoke and eat some Mexican junk food.

  • It was very late, I had a cough, and I was trying to find a place that was not enveloped in cigarette smoke. (One day there will be no smoking anywhere!) I came across El Bonito, of all cuisines to find in Kyoto, a Mexican place. I knew it couldn’t be great, but since I live in California and love Mex, I gave it a try. It’s on the second floor, and while there’s not really a no smoking area, the only patrons puffing were at the bar. I got a table next to a window and away from the bar. No one spoke Spanish, and no one spoke much English. The menu was a bit inflexible. I initially asked for a vegetarian taco which they declined until I asked if that had beans and guacamole. So, I ordered a bean and guac soft taco, (12 Yen) some avocado soup (8 Yen), and some guacamole and chips (5 yen and they told me the trips were fried in lard), a tomato salad (8 Yen) with a glass of white wine (5 Yen). Well, it wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible. The staff took a long time between “courses” maybe because I was ordering non standard items (?). I had to ask for salsa, and it was non-descript and not picante at all. I wouldn’t go here again and only my fatigue prompted my visit in the first place. The place accommodates 30 people and there were 17 guests,-all Asian, so someone likes it! I didn’t see another Mexican restaurant outside of Tokyo.

  • When you travel enough, you come to realize that Mexican is a sorely under represented good group, particularly in Asia and even more particularly in Japan. However, El Bonito is a saving grace in Japan's barren Mexican food market. A couple of guys, who have never been to Mexico, figured out a way to make some of the most authentic Mexican tapas outside of Mexico itself. The salsa is enchanting, the quesadilla devine, and the rest is just mouth watering. Throw in a couple of Japanese inspired fusion dishes, and you've got a restaurant that you make a priority on ever trip to Kyoto. All served up by the friendliest owners you could ask for, this place deserves more than just one visit a trip!
