  • Such traditionally authentic so but noodles that you must try to appreciate. Delicious chilled and dipped in soya. Reasonable lunch prices with a short wait. Great spot for tourists when in Kyoto that you. An buy some treats to take home with you as well.

  • Visited as a couple for lunch in December 2013 We had run quite behind schedule and needed a place for a late lunch. At that point we were nearby the Nishiki Market area and sort of stumbled upon this Soba restaurant. It was almost 3PM and we were hungry - the shop doesn't seem to close in the afternoon so it worked out well for us. Best part about this shop is probably the location. It is on the Nishiki-Tominokoji intersection (not on the Nishiki strip proper--you will need to turn out onto Tominokoji for a few feet to see it). This makes it pretty convenient, accessible from Sanjo /Shijo dori. Nishiki is full of goodies to eat but I actually prefer meal time to be a proper sit down and relaxation period... Owariya offers this. The restaurant is a decent size with private booth table seating (as opposed to bench). Quite comfortable overall and would be a good place to relax for a snack and a tea. For a shop advertising itself as a Soba restaurant, the menu actually has a pretty comprehensive offering. In addition to the Soba, you can get Udon here both with or without soup and various donburis--basically almost the full menu you would associate with a regular Japanese cafe, just with a few more varied offering on Soba. You can even order Soba sets paired with donburis (only in Japan I think). We stuck to typical Soba preparations though, given that's how the shop markets itself. The food was average to slight above average. Soba is standard thickness and colour, cooked to good firmness. There isn't any flexibility on how your Soba is prepared (or at least we weren't offered any). Basically, Owariya beats most Soba I've had outside Japan, but versus other shops within Japan there isn't a whole lot to write home about. We ordered one Soba with a side of tempura and one hot soup Soba. Tempura was crispy and also good but average. Prices are average for the Nishiki area. At the counter you can also purchase Owariya merchandise. They sell their own Soba and a few other
