We had a reservation and arrived on time 2 hours before the Billy Joel concert. We were rudely told we would have to wait because they didn't have any tables, but they had our reservation. After 20 minutes we were sat at a booth in the front against the window. We waited 10 minutes for our waiter to arrive and 20 minutes for our drinks. There were ants crawling all over the wall! After 45 minutes our waiter said the kitchen was backed up, and our food would be right out. 10 minutes later, with no food in site, we had to leave to make the concert. A major disappointment, rude host, wouldn't recommend this place, ever.

Just outside the Garden, this American Pub, with a Greek flair offers a great beer deal, but you have to ask or pay attention to the small sign. Get a bucket of any beer they carry for as little as $ 20. Granted, it's only four beers to a bucket, but if you compare the cost of buying each beer separately, then the cost would be as much as $ 7 each. We ordered Peronis. For dinner we split the chicken sandwich with avocado, bacon, and cheese. It was tasty and served on focaccia bread. The French fries are excellent. Cost was a bit higher than average, but it's NYC. Service was good, and the ambience--sports like. The value was good, especially the beer bucket. Very convenient to Penn and the Garden. Would definitely go back.

Location was the reason we chose this place - right across the street from Madison Square Garden. Atmosphere was just OK - lots of TV's but badly placed if you want to watch sports at this sports bar. Our table was against the wall and I could see one large screen tv about 3 feet from my face. The food was not great. My wife had a burger - it was alright. Very large portion. I had an open faced steak sandwich that wasn't good. It was a shell steak over toast. While I didn't mind much because I don't like to eat much bread, but white toast? How about a half of a roll? The steak was over cooked and was very tough. I don't expect filet mignon from a steak sandwich, but this one wasn't very good. One high point was the service. Our waiter was attentive and did a good job. I won't be back to Cafe 31 - too many other choices right nearby. Not sure why this place is listed as Cafe Thirty First on Trip Advisor, when it is clearly called Cafe 31 - just look at the sign on the restaurant. Maybe they don't want bad reviews.

The menu is not complicated ... burgers, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, some Greek-American items, and more. The food is pretty good. Part of it is a sports bar, but there's a large seating area with linen tablecloths and many wide-screen TVs showing all kinds of sports. It's right across the street from Madison Square Garden/Penn Station, which places it just a few blocks from Macy's. I was there on a Saturday afternoon when the Garden was quiet, and they were able to seat a party of nine immediately. No telling what it looks like one hour before the Rangers drop the puck. Prices are about what you'd expect for this quality in this location.
